By, Susie Lai Welcome to the inaugural season of our Women’s Ball Hockey League in NYC! We had a very exciting first week of games. As we start really getting into the season, we wanted to begin building the community and highlighting the social aspects of this league. To kick things off, we asked our new captains a few questions…let’s meet the teams! Oh, and before we forget: a huge huge huge round of applause and shoutout must go to Marcella and the entire WBHL leadership team. Thank you to all of the refs, goalies, and everyone working out there, on and off the rink, to make this league a reality. Stick taps to all! Now, let’s dive into the hotly anticipated announcement of our official team names for this season… introducing Nimbus 2000 captained by Charlotte and Ryann, Black Widows captained by LJ, and The Yetis captained by Courtney! First up: The Yetis! Courtney’s goal for her team this season is to build that synergy and build that team culture. It’s incredibly exciting that this team is filled with players ranging in playing experience. During week #1, The Yetis made some great plays together, and many of the new players demonstrated great hockey sense. This team cannot wait to play together, support one another, and grow their skills and knowledge of the game throughout the season. The evolution of this team is going to be amazing to watch. (Fun fact, one of their teammates, Amanda, has a Black Belt in Taekwondo!) Week 1 was a smashing success for the newly named Black Widows (wait till you see their super cool pregame animal noises – this media editor is NOT biased at all), and while Captain LJ has self proclaimed severe FOMO from not being in town that week, she is excited for the team to play together week in and week out and learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Teambuilding is so key for LJ and she’s excited to watch this team communicate with each other, build their confidence in themselves and each other, and push their boundaries on the rink. By the way, this team is so cool that Marvel named a superhero after them. Rounding out our inaugural teams season is Nimbus 2000, captained by Charlotte and Ryann, and I bet if you watch them on the rink, you’ll see that they’re just as speedy as the broomstick they’re named after. Captains Charlotte and Ryann are coming into this season with high hopes of winning a championship: the coveted Quidditch World Cup… oh, wrong sport. Even though many of the teammates have never met each other, week 1 was filled with fierce competition. Major thanks to the subs as well who helped out that first week! Week 1 really was a day that helped to grow the game, and the Nimbus 2000’s are proud to be a part of it. As for what color the Nimbus 2000’s wear on the court? Captains Char and Ryann would like to let everyone know that they’re blue and/or red, and blood is blue and/or red… With week 1 in the books and week 2 fast approaching, this is shaping up to be a great inaugural season! Thanks to the Captains for all the great work you do, and we look forward to another fun slate of games on Saturday. See y’all at 10 to kick things up a notch with some chalk talk!
